A warning for thosw who think Macs dont need anti virus etc

500,000 infected Macs and climbing

Macs aren't targeted as often as Windows but they still are.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

So if I keep my Mac patched up to date with the latest Apple security update - do you think it's worth using separate anti-virus package?

What would people recommend?

I'd prefer to wait until these figures (that come from a security software company) are corroborated.

There are various things in this article that, whilst not screaming FUD, do have the letters looming out of the text.

Could just be a slow news day and some lazy PC journalists. I'd not rush into anti-virus software just yet, but I'd continue to avoid streaming video from .nu websites...

I'm no Apple fanboy but I read the various articles and err between traces of potential truth, marketing guff and elaborate hoax/scam/potential phis.   Difficult to know really.

This link contains information about what happens during the infection process.

Check out what apps on the system cause the payload to delete itself...

Considering the computer owner has to install the trojan in the first place, I'm not going to panic. In fact seeing as it's masquerading as a Flash update it's all the more reason to go Mac + HTML5 and ditch systems that are heavy Flash users.

That was my initial thought (a trojan, not a virus) but according to Jaded's link it somehow manages to do some sort of malware installation even if you don't enter your admin password.

Not if you have got office installed...

I think you have to look at where most of the infected sites are. Then ask yourself if a million or so Mac users would go there.

Even assuming you had automatic updates enabled, that's a bountiful window of opportunity for infection.

You may want to try Avast: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-mac
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.
