Recommend me a (sensibly priced) webcam
« on: 01 May, 2012, 12:07:17 am »
I don't have a particularly flash computer, but mother in law has just signed up to Skype and wants to chat to her grand kids from time to time, so it's time to buy myself a webcam.

What's worth looking at for less than £50?

What do I need to look out for or avoid?

I have no clue.

Having had some naff cheap ones in the past, I bought a Creative Live Cam and I'm v happy with it. About £15- 20 for the non-HD version (I wouldn't worry about the HD) and it has a mic built in.

Wot 'e said.  Have bought several dozen of 'em in various versions over the last couple of years (for class sets for stop motion animation, not because they keep breaking!) and they've all been fine.

Or, just because they are ver' cool and funky, a Hue HD.  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hue-webcam-blue-built--Windows/dp/B001LEGDEG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335853496&sr=8-3

They aren't, IMO, worth paying more for from the point of view of camera and sound for skype-ing.  But the do look fabulous.  I have a green one.  Shame my laptop objects to webcams - must get around to sorting that at some point!
