Actually only watched about 10 minutes of it before deciding it was unmitigated sh!t and deciding that staring at a blank screen would be more entertaining.

Saving Private Ryan  - it's only saving grace

No...it's definitely only saving Ryan.

That is a shame.  It's quite a good film. Worth watching for Col. Hans Landa

The first 10 minutes is Hans Landa trying to find the hidden Jews in the farm house isn't it?  I thought that was remarkably tense.

Admittedly it was a bit like the Childcatcher in CCBB ...but that's the scariest moment in film (well it is in my memory anyway)

I tried watching it on TV, but gave up at some point in the looong 'sitting around talking' bit...

The long sitting around talking bits are one of the reasons I like IB. People having conversations, rather than just spouting plot exposition. Too little of that in film these days, IMHO.

Star Wars.

however. I didn't see it in optimum conditions; to call the alleged cinema a flea pit would be excessive praise. It was a roofed-over yard, with an uneven (and sloping) floor, covered with a damp carpet and a thick layer of crisp packets, bottles and cans. The  seats were knackered and dusty, the screen dirty and the speakers blown. The sound quality didn't matter too much, because we were distracted by the constant rustling of creatures scurrying about in the debris on the floor.

ever since I haven't been able to take Star Wars seriously.

Something happened in that one.
I was at a very impressionable age when it came out. Something certainly happened to me when I saw it.

I think Emmanuelle Beart might have something to do with it...?

In my copy the actress was the understudy, Emmanuelle Pert.

See, that's just the wrong choice of film.  What you wanted there was Tremors...

CCBB is quite possibly the worst adaption of a book evvah.  Take a ripping yarn and then get rid of all of it and replace it with something simultaneously mawkish and just plain crap.  If The Bear ever meets those responsible...

But Lionel Jeffries and Robert Helpmann are both magnificent.
