What annoys me with Twister is in the very first frames there is an error. You can see that they are using a looped bit of film to make the opening shot.
Current mood: AARRRGGGGHHHHH !!! #bollockstobrexit

USAnians tend to use all sorts of different designations for roads interchangeably, to the confustication of all.  See for e.g. "Route 66", "Highway 61" etc.

I just re-watched The Abyss.  It's been a while, and while the hardware pr0n is as good as ever, the corridors are simply top-notch, and everybody loves a rat in a bucket of Fluorinert, I now realise that its Bechdel Test status is marginal at best.  Still, bonus points for having a slightly neurodiverse ass-kicking female engineer (who's actually seen doing some plot-critical engineering) as one of the main characters - something that made a big impression on me at a formative age.

The aliens are as twee as ever.  James Cameron's Space Marines are interchangeable, even when they're just normal marines seals.  And the ending roots the film firmly in the 1980s.

Something I hadn't really twigged before is that the aliens communicate with Lindsey telepathically at several points, not just during the tentacle scene.  That makes so much more sense.

I could explain it. But it's probably not something that can be done in fewer than 200 words. All to do with whether a section is classed as Federal (Interstates and US Routes), State (Highways, Freeways, Expressways), or County/Township (Roads, Routes). There are Multitudinous Quirks, but there is a method to the madness.

It ought to come as no surprise to anyone that I liked Twister.

The official designations are easy enough to grok, but if you go to sell your soul to Stan you do it at the junction of US-61 and US-49, both of which are famed in song as "Highway nn".  NV-305, on which the Battle Mountain event is run, is often called both "Highway 305" and "Route 305"; it lies on the south side of I-80, frequently known as "the freeway".

2001: A Space Odyssey.  There may be a shortage of dialogue for the first umpteen minutes of the film but with 7.1 sound those are some LOUD munkehs!

It may not be dialogue to you......

It's in my top 5 films.
My mum took me to see the original cinema release, thinking it was something a bit more Thunderbirds-ish I expect.
The apes scared the living shit out of me then I fell asleep for the rest of it.

The docking sequence, to Strauss, is a cinematic masterpiece, possibly the cinematic masterpiece.

Kick Ass, however, remains one of the best Super Hero Films of modern times :)

I concur.

It has some stand-out funny moments, mostly based around a little girl swearing or removing some fella's body parts but there's a whole funny thing going on with a "Gay friend" sub-plot.

If the violence were slightly less over the top (or, in the case of the sequel, even more over the top) it would be dreadful.

Twister is.....meh.

It passes the "remote control on the coffee table test"* I suppose.

*The remote is on the coffee table and the film isn't quite bad enough to warrant sitting up and retrieving it and watching "A Place in the Sun" or whatever.

Fury.

Imagine every cliche, from every war film you have ever seen.

Now imagine Brad Pitt acting out those cliches.

The tanks should have got an oscar! I did have to winch a bit though at all the munitions pinging off the tanks.  Either the tanks were very good replicas or they were borrowed from enthusiasts (and, as the film was shot in Oxfordshire I am guessing the latter).  If the former then I hope they weren't damaged too much.

Oh and BP's prosthetics were rubbish, you could see the edges of the fake scars (as in where they stuck onto his face and back)

Last night I watched The Imitation Game followed by Pride.

The former was ok, if a little lightweight.  For a character as serious as Turing it had it's funny moments.

The latter was just froth, I didn't get anything out of it.  The Mark Ashton character strutted about like Matt Lucas's "Only gay in the village" character.  Seeing the guy out of The Wire as Jonathon was a bit weird.  Can't, honestly, say I was taken by it.  I'd rather watch Brassed Off again, if I was in the mood to watch a film about the time of the miner's strike.

Pride is best watched in the cinema, with a huge crowd old enough to have been gay during that period.

That's how I watched it, there were people crying, laughing and bursting out clapping with joy at different bits.

I had to read that several times to work out what you meant! Worried you had turned Christian Fundamentalist

Anyway, last night I watched

Good Vibrations

Absolutely loved it - the title may be accurate but gives an impression it might be quite a different film. And similar to the above, it is probably best with a crowd old enough to have been punk during that period...

Ah good. That goes back onto my list of films to watch when everyone else is out. It dropped off the list because of the reviews.
