Nope - not ruined. "Just" four 600s or better in a season regardless of what else you do.

Aha - just read the hyper Super Fixed Wheel definition in the 2011 AUK handbook and
found this slight ambiguity in definition that I found interesting as a recent fixed wheel
bike owner!  8)

Is "hyper" 4 600s in an AUK year, or is it the most recent SR of the current AUK season
consisting of 4 600s? I.e. do one need to do four straight 600 km BR's with no other BRs
in between any of the 600's to be hyper?

E.g. if I do a 600 in Nov, a 200 in Dec, a 600 in Jan, a 600 in Feb and a 600 in Mar, is that
a hyper, or does the 200 in Dec ruin the hyper-ness?
no its any 4, no matter when, I did a200 between mine

Hmm, would an ECE'd (sub 600) calendar count for Hyper purposes?

A group DIY does, so I can't see why an ECE wouldn't. Why not ECE a 100  :demon:

I'll be riding down to Bethersden for the Fairies 300 for a 500km outing. I guess I could find another 100km from somewhere.

The argument against is that I wouldn't be committed to a 600km 'all or nothing' outing. Then again, 600km is 600km. One for greater minds than mine.

It's a fast 300, and very fixed friendly. With the 2AM Sunday morning start you could do all the extra distance (minus the ride home) up front.

It's an interesting one. A few years ago I entered a 100km ride with the intention of cycling 100km home afterwards and entered the whole thing as a DIY 200 (before the days of ECE). On the day I was so hungover I barely scraped round the 100km ride and so ditched any idea of cycling home, but still submitted the 100km ride Brevet Card (no points except for FWC points).

I'm not sure what I would have done if it had been worth real AUK points. I guess I didn't complete what I set out to do and so I should get nothing unless there's an opportunity to 'reset' what you're doing, i.e.

enter it as ECE 200+Cal300+100 then the various bailing options, and outcomes, are:-
1) Bail on the first 200 and you can get yourself to the calendar event and just ride it as a 300. OK since you can DNF the whole thing and submit a new goal of just the calendar ride (before you've started it).
2) Bail on the calendar event or the ride home and you're stuffed as you've already committed to doing the whole thing. The problem is that the Brevet card for the calendar ride has already been submitted.

Enter it as ECE 300+Cal300 and you can:
1) Bail on the first 300 and get yourself to the calendar event to ride it as a 300.
2) Bail on the calendar event and get nothing for the day(s) riding.

It's a fast 300, and very fixed friendly. With the 2AM Sunday morning start you could do all the extra distance (minus the ride home) up front.

What a silly idea!

FWIW Scottlington and I did the equivalent of ECE-ing the Fairies 300 into a 600 back in 2008. Starting 6am on Saturday we bimbled from Putney up to Cambridge and back for 200km, then did Putney, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Bethersden for another 100km arriving at about 1am (not as early as I'd hoped). Tried to grab some rest in the hall before the start, and then set off for the 300 (where the vast majority of the field dropped us within the first few km).

If you do it this way (300km to the start of the ride) then you can finish in time for the train back from Pluckley to London (last direct one is just after 10pm, which should be easy for a flat 300), then it's just a short bimble for you back to West London.

Front-loading a (300km or longer) calendar event can be a good way of guaranteeing a quiet day on your own.

There is nothing more annoying then missing the start of the calendar event having ECE'd the ride out, though reaching the arrivee rediculously early because you were 'feeling strong' i.e., had a tailwind, and then discovered you had misread the starting time, comes a close second.

I was thinking of, say, a 10am start for an initial 200km, with a view to being finished by 9pm and getting at least a couple of hours sleep before the start at 2am (I'd carry a bivvy bag and liner), leaving 27 hours for the 300 and 100km home (hopefully home by midnight).

My first thought was to ride down to Shoreham and along the South Coast then inland to Bethersen, but it may be more audacious to ride the first 200km of Swarmcatchers 300km London to Brighton via Whitstable and Margate, areas I haven't ridden in before.

It was more that 300km and longer rides tend to draw the stronger riders who are much more likely to leave you for dust when they start the calendar ride with fresh legs (compared to already having 300km in them). 100s and 200s aren't usually a problem as there's much more chance of slower riders to pootle off with at the start.

No.  I would say that the amount of beer + bridie based calories that I consumed after the snow roads must rank as my finest hour (and a bit).   More pleeze on 2/6/12.   :)

Hyper Ranndonneur should be an official AUK award IMO.
You're only as successful as your last 1200...

You'd have to persuade Francis to cough up for a trophy.

I coughed up for a (the?) Recumbent Cup a few years ago. Maybe I should donate a Hyper trophy too? Maybe a few red Smarties would suffice.

You've done a 1200 and a 1300 ride this year Tim. That's half a hyper (i.e. two 600 equivalents)

Edited later to add...

So what is it called if one dose 4 really long ones. Mega Mad?

If you did another couple of "really long ones" like, say, a couple of 1,000km rides then they'd each qualify as a 600 and you'd be hyper too.
