Bathroom renovation & new shower tray. Help !
« on: 14 October, 2023, 09:05:35 pm »

This is my bathroom. As you can see it's tiny.   The old shower tray cracked during the week & is now junk.    I need a new shower tray asap as I'm currently showering in the local sports centre.

I also want to do a quick & dirty refresh of the bathroom, ideally without re-tiling it.  I'm planning on selling the place in the next 18 month, so want it to look presentable without spending too much money.  So rip out the worst of the black & mouldy grout & redo with new stuff ?

I'm not going to find a shower tray to match the existing toilet & sink, so assuming a white shower tray replace with a white toilet & a smaller basin in a vanity unit for extra storage.

The old shower tray was 760mm x 760mm x 210mm.  I had to cut a channel through it for the water feed to the toilet.  All the current shower trays I see are very low profile, so will have to be raised to accommodate  the pipe.  What is the best way to do this, get a tray with legs such as

I think an enclosure or cubical would take up too much space.

How much area preparation is going to be needed ?  There seems to have been some seepage into the area below the shower tray,  plaster fell away from the brickwork and the plywood underneath where the tram was is damp & soft.

I'm on the top floor, so don't want to make a mess of this & flood my downstairs neighbours.  Is it best to get a plumber/bathroom fitter in & leave it to him ?

I think given that you're not planning to live there long term I'd be going for an enclosure, but one that looks like a quarter of a pie, if you see what I mean. It will be less intrusive against the lav.

Problem with what you have there is that the tiles should be laid over the top of the 'upstand' (or whatever the correct parlance is in shower tray).
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

If you are selling in 18 months leave as much to the new residents as possible .. bodge it and be honest!
Having said that a proper shower tray install, especially on wooden floor involes hacking off the lower tiles and fixing a rubber upstand strip which stick like sh*t around the back of the tray. The top of this is then under the tiles. This all accomodates movement and makes the silicone seal between tray and tiles decorative rather than fundamental. If you fit a cabinet the side rails must have gaps on the tray side to allow water getting inside the extrusion to run out.

The smallest quadrant enclosures I can find are 800mm.  That would overlap the existing sink & toilet, so would only be feasible if I could find extra slim replacements for them.

Victoria Plumb have an Aurora shower tray in 760 X 760 with riser kit.

Some tile modifications may be necessary and a hefty bead of silicone too.

Enclosures are always more difficult.  I assume what was there is not able to be reused?

Just replace the tray.  Even if it doesn’t match, who’s going to care. A new purchaser will likely do a complete renovation anyway.

If I just go down the shower tray & curtain route it will have to be a deep tray combined with a riser kit.

Would the one listed be compatible with the position of the existing waste pipe ?   Would it be possible to replace the toilet water feed with a flexible pipe if it fouled the riser feet ?

If I need to cut existing tiles to fit would a diamond wheel on a Dremel do the job ?  I've got one somewhere.
