As an engineering trainee my bunch of mates studying at AQAD Harefield came up with a logistical challenge, which was to drink in as many counties in one evening as possible. First attempt we managed nine and on the second 10. This was in the days of 6pm opening and 11pm closing.
Geography is not my strongest point, but that sounds impressive. Which counties, and did you have a driver?
Yes, two cars, two designated drivers.
We worked in Harefield and were staying in a hostel in Denham, so in fairly short order we had managed Herts, Bucks and Middx (we were working on traditional county boundaries). Then round to the M3 (this was 1980/81 and I don't recall how much of the M25 was in place) and off to the Surrey/Hants border for a swift two halves. Then headed Northish roughly Readingwards to knock off Berkshire (a Morlands pub possibly), then somewhere in Oxon and out to Lechlade in Glos. The final leg was to the Belle Vue in old Swindon Town (Wilts).
Why there ? My brother was a journo on the Swindon Evening Advertiser and this was his local. We made the front page the next day.
After that it gets a little blurry. I think we slept in the car near Silbury Hill and clambered up it next morning.
The next time we did it we moved a little faster and added a beer in Bath (Som) to the list.
Happy days.
