Back in the olden days that was a pretty useful guide for tourists, viz. don't drink the domestos domestic if you can possibly avoid it.

I am reminded of the American sailor on shore leave in Naploli who sent a postcard home stating that "They have pizza here!"

The author shows a picture of the 1970s extension to Bradford TE, my working home for 10 years, and not the much prettier 1930s original Portland Stone building (which I suppose is excluded in his PhD title). I’ve also worked in Halifax TE and Baynard House and visited Liverpool a couple of times.
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

Liverpool Rooftops - Beetham Tower and Lancaster House by Dave Wood, on Flickr

I've spent most of the last 25+ years in Lancaster House, pictured above.  A 1930's building with some nice original touches.  The bit at the back was grafted on during the 1970's.

I didn't venture to that side of Embra when I was up there a few years ago.  A striking complex of buildings.  It would be a shame to replace it with something dull, and they want to cut all the trees down :-(  .

I think if I saw one of these coming towards me on the beach I'd be making a rapid retreat!

"Strandbeesten (or Strandbeest in singular) means “beach beasts” in Dutch. Since 1990, Jansen has created large moving kinetic structures that are sometimes wind-propelled and in that way able to move on their own. He entitled them collectively as Strandbeest. These breathtaking creatures traveling over sand resemble walking animals and they are constructed from PVC pipes, wood, fabric airfoils, and zip ties. In fact, materials used for their production are being constantly improved and designed to adapt sand beaches or different types of environments in which Theo releases them."

I have dragged myself out of my comfort zone and booked a place at the British Kodaly Academy Summer School at Nottingham University. This is a course in singing, largely aimed at teachers, but it's also possible to go along for one's own enjoyment, which I plan to do.

I have also just booked some rail tickets to get me there and back. How jolly exciting!

If the Bach Choral Course at St. Andrew's Uni had been running this year, I would have gone to that instead.

I last attended the Kodaly course in 2000 when it was at Cheltenham Ladies' College. It was an excellent week.

It does look like a Jetsons' house but it also looks like a (short, squat) water tower.

Nice views, but looks like it needs a bit of work judging by the staining visible on one of the walls.

The lift doesn't really look big enough to easily get bikes in; doable but a bit of jiggling.

Bit like the one at Derby station.  Fortunately there's a decent sized bunker at ground level for bikes and Genie lifts.

I like the I'm-from-Europe-and-this-all-looks-terribly-unsafe electrickery.  And the tastefully matched water tank in the bathroom.

Walked past that for two years. The combination of the Crags behind, the Commonwealth Pool next door and the Pollock Halls of Residence too, made for a very interesting landscape. Pollock Halls has been mashed up, with one of the original iconic towers demolished for more expensive accommodation.
It is simpler than it looks.

Went to the Royal Academy summer exhibition yesterday. First time for me.
Very random, a lot of thought provoking art, not much dross.
Crowded. Not enough places to sit for old farts like me. Grumpy staff.
But the bottom line - well worth the effort.
Too many angry people - breathe & relax.
