It seems to me that a pretty good strategy is to use different letters in the first two words, involving as many vowels as possible and then for the next, fit in the consonants where they will go. My problems tends to be impetuosity after that: my 4th try was a totally wasted opportunity because I included the A again in a space where I knew it didn't go.

My standard first three words; STROP, CHILD and MANGE cover off the 15 most used letters in English, except that the G should be a U, but I figured that if I've used the other four vowels and got no hits then a U or a Y is a given.

G is the 17th most used (B is 16th).

Therefore, when I've run those three words through I have a pretty good idea what the answer will be through a process of elimination.

I can see why the harder mode requires you to use the letters already found as I find it much easier to use a completely independent second word to rule in or out more letters. If you have found one or two letters it limits the words you can use to find the others.

I always start with "stare" I think that and "tears" are the most popular common starters.

I started with "magic" today and got it in 4. It would have been 3 if I hadn't stupidly re-used the M.

I wonder if there's much in it between TEARS, STARE and RATES as a starter word, in terms of the distribution of greens and yellows that they yield over a long run.
It wouldn't be hard to write a crude version of Wordle in Excel or similar...  but the beauty of Wordle is that you only waste five minutes a day on it...

According to wiki, there are more words in the English language starting with a T than any other letter, so...

We could also do with a list of the most commonly used letters in five letter words, in sequence of frequency.

Wordle has proved to be a great hit on my family WhatsApp group. Everyone seems to enjoy doing it and it provides a good reason to "check in" with each other every day without taking much time, so thanks hatler for drawing our attention to it  :)
