The only rooms available on these dates at Berwick YH are private rooms - no dorms. If we want to do this, people need to get booking.

Threadcromancy...

As it doesn't look like this has gone anywhere, and barakta and I aren't going near a hostel for coronalurgi reasons, I'm unilaterally declaring an intention for Etherley Farm, as recommended by cycleman in a previous thread.  It seems to tick the main YACF boxes of proper facilities, not too regimented, FIRE allowed, a farm shop, and reasonably close to a railway.  Far enough south that cycleman can get funding for it.  There may be BEARS.

Looks like the most practical train journey is down to Euston then Victoria to Dorking.  Any bike problems on that line ?

Does the campsite have room on those dates ?  We might not be the only unpatriotic traitors who want a weekend away.....

It's been years since I last used it, but it was standard pick-your-time-of-day-carefully small commuter trains.

You can bring non-folding cycles on many of our trains. But during the busy morning and afternoon commuting hours, space on board is at a premium. So unfortunately, we can’t let you bring regular bikes along during peak hours.

Peak hour trains are the following (Monday through Friday, excluding Bank Holidays):

trains due to arrive in London, Brighton or Kensington Olympia between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
trains departing London, Brighton or Kensington Olympia between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Quote
You cannot take bikes on or off trains that are due to arrive at London Waterloo between 07:15 and 10:00 or trains which leave London Waterloo between 16:45 and 19:00.

I don't think there's any engineering work on either route.  Yet.  But there seems to be a lot going on elsewhere on the network, which may make things busy.

The checker thing shows availability.  I haven't booked anything yet as I need pin barakta down with her ork calendars and a functional brain in order to determine which days she wants to do (I'm working on the principle that she'll likely want a day at home to recover afterwards).

Some years ago, Jane organised a bash at a youth hostel* slap bang in the middle of the Surrey Hills near Ranmoor Common. She took the hostel over from the Friday evening to the Monday morning I think. I stayed one night and took my bike on a train. I've forgotten which station I went to on the Saturday (early morning - I arrived around 9am I think and had breakfast with those who had overnighted). It may have been Westhumble.

On the return on the Sunday I was dogged by the usual replacement bus curse and whichever station I went to involved dragging my bike up a long flight of steps to platform level. It will be worth checking on the train service that weekend, depending upon the days we want to stay. I'm assuming at least Friday and Saturday evenings.

Must be a gubbishment filter to stop all those boat people ...

Joking aside, that's unfortunate on so many levels.

I'm hoping that we might be elsewhere that weekend.  Getting away from cap doffing and forelock tugging will be quite a challenge in Ing-huh-laaaaaand.

There’ll be no cap doffing in our home. Tbh, I’d forgotten all about it until I read this thread today.

Need a plan…

With no cap-doffing in your gaff you could find yourself with a couple of dozen yacf'ers in your garden.   😉

I haven't attended a forum camp since this post

I'd declined the offer before negotiations got that far. [Edit: we didn't even discuss whether VAT would be due.] As it happens my activities for the rest of the week led to an indirect contact with the GDR security services in a Milan Kundera sort of way.
That sounds like a tale that needs to be told. (ideal setting would probably be a campfire, etc, but who knows)

That site is a handful of miles from my Rural Idyll. I have one commitment that weekend already, but it would be rude not to give it a go.

I've got as far as planning an approximate route. I'm going to have to spend the next month trying to get fit, or at least become less unfit. Or else look at trains (first option might be easier!)

Possible/probable subject to domestic arrangements. Will have to be by car. Anyone spoken to them, they are not keen on groups?

I noticed something about no groups of more than four under-25s but nothing about groups in general. I expect everyone attending will be over 25...  :-\

Are people putting YACF as a reference when booking? Or are we just hoping not to end up at opposite corners? Or even hoping that we will.
