Decent restaurant within easy reach of Peterborough Station?
« on: 22 September, 2023, 10:26:22 pm »
On 25th October Jan and I are planning to meet an old friend (Enid) near Peterborough. It's not a town/city that immediately springs to mind as a venue for top class cuisine etc, but there are good reasons for meeting there, mainly that it's about half-way between Southend and Enid's house in North Lincs, and it is easy for Enid to reach by train. She has recently had an operation to re-attach her retina and is awaiting cataract operations, so for her to drive is out of the question.

It also just happens to be Jan's 70th birthday, so we are looking for somewhere pretty decent.

Looking at rail tickets, it's probably worth Jan and me going by train as well. I've found advance tickets at under £30 return each with the OBRC and we'd be shelling out about £30 for electricity for the car.

I used to live in Peterborough but the two places I would have recommended are both closed down. So yes you are right there is no top class cuisine there.

There’s a fairly standard French brasserie style place in cathedral square a short walk from the station.

Lincoln road has a range of Polish, Portuguese, Pakistani and Indian places reflecting Peterborough’s heritage but they’re all pretty basic/downmarket. Five minutes by taxi.

There was The Great Wall of China, but it closed down. Allegedly because of Alsatians in the freezer.
It is simpler than it looks.

In Peterborough or just outside?

The Haycock at Wansford? The Talbot in Oundle? Only suitable if you have driven I guess.

The Falcon at Fotheringhay

Very hit and miss pub food currently.
