Is there a mapping software that can read OSM data?
« on: 19 February, 2009, 08:57:49 pm »
That would be cool to plan bike rides when OSM gets there. In a perfect world i would be able to
  • Pan and zoom around
  • Create a route which gives me:
    • elevation
    • editable GPX of waypoints for each turn
    • tracklog
  • upload my gps track after a ride to view it + upload to OSM the missing bits

I know, I can be a bit of a dreamer... But I find that in Bristol the OSM data is more detailed than OSmaps

A Bikely-style route planner shouldn't be beyond the wit of man.  Can I suggest that you visit OpenCycleMap.org and suggest it to the alpha nerds as a really good upgrade?
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

CloudMade Maps does routing and is based on OSM data, though doesn't do the bells and whistles yet.

Oh, Cloudmade is good.  I love the different routing modes.  Fast too!

(though it does think lanes are better than a-roads, caveat routor, my test routes would be a trifle hilly!)

+1 on cloudmade. I have entered my commute as a test and it gave me the route I am using the most often!!!

Bingo!!!

If you press export, it gives you a track made with wpt  + a rte with turn by turn rtept!!!

I still need to tinker for it to be usable by my cheap GPS but it looks good.

Good, innit?  :)

The "cycle" mode is very A-road shy and very bike-lane happy, though.  Worth trying both.

I'll tell you what, routing really shows where the map is a bit dodgy.  I've just spent half an hour linking paths that were just flopped onto the map near each other - fine for eyeballs, not for routing.  If you get an insane routing choice, it's worth checking at the first "silly" turn that the turn is drawn right!

Really good...

And there is an API: Python Lib Examples - Python API - CloudMade Developers Zone
that humans can understand!

and it calculated land end to John O Groat in 15s...

I've looked at these, but not tried them myself yet:
Viking - Main Page - VikingWiki
Prune - Activity Workshop - Prune
QLandKarte - Welcome to QLandkarte GT/M

I think they can display OSM maps, and let you plot tracks, waypoints etc on them, and transfer to a GPS etc. Though I don't think they do autorouting.

Or there's Gosmore: Gosmore - OpenStreetMap
It can display OSM maps and do autorouting (including some sort of bicycle routing), but I don't know if it can save the routes to GPX or anything.

Thanks Craig, these look good for post ride analysis!
