Your cycling purchases
« on: 19 April, 2009, 10:04:13 pm »
So, do you have stealth purchases?
Do you muddle up the price you paid with something from Lidl?
Or do you come clean on your Rapha kit?
It is simpler than it looks.

I don't deny them once she sees them on me or the bike.  She has the good grace not to ask how much though.

Yes. Completely. So far as I am concerned, every cycling purchase is a treat for my dear wife. Why would she object?

Aw, c'mon, Rapha's not that good.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Yes (this is with my mum, rather than a wife). Though much of the time, it's after I've bought them (someone's got to take the deliveries in...). Now if I could persuade her that two bikes are most definitely not enough......

I find black shows the stains.  And they are so persistent.

I find that the cat doesn't mind what I spend money on, so long as I keep buying him suitable cat food. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

mrs mike mainly does that too (although there has been some muttering recently), it makes her feel less guilty about spending on the horse.. :)

I get away with a lot.  She knows but she doesn't hassle - she just says "you'd better do a lot of riding to make it worth it!"  I'm working on that one. :-[

The bike shop staff laughed on Saturday as I quietly peeled the price tickets off everything before packing it away for transportation home.

There's no need or point lying about the cost.

I think your better half or cat may accept a lower price tag :P

But these days I spend more on her bike :D

And the only cycling gear I have are a  nice pair of road shoes donated by C+ :o

When I got the new bike through the C2W scheme last year, I'm sure I did tell her in advance but she still seemed surprised when I brought it home. But I didn't bother trying to be stealthy about it - clothes and accessories, yes. Whole bikes, no.

It was ages before I owned up to how much it cost though!  ;D

I don't hide what stuff costs, after all Mrs F knows the owners of the LBS :)

When I was planning my last whole bike purchase we worked out a budget together, and how we could achieve that budget(which unfortunately meant I had to sell a lot of the bike stable :( )

When Mrs J found out how much I was spending on my bikes/equipment/clothing she filed for divorce!

she's not that bothered as i don't usually buy much, but i think getting the SM powdercoated might test her!

If the wife's bike is the most expensive in the fleet the above circumstance does not arise ;)

Well, I'm not sure quite how I'm going to slip this in under the radar:

..but at a new price of £430 from hewitts ebay site as opposed to £900 from anywhere else I could try and convince her that I have in fact saved nearly £500. If it works out it will become my new audax steed.

It's only the bank that might complaint ifwhen I spend to much on bicycle related items.
I do most of my shopping on the interweb, but I'm still on first name  basis with 2 of the lbs in this town.

(It's better to spend them on parts than go out bingedrinking every weekend) ;)

One well known London area roadman always had a new frame each year - sprayed identically to the current one.

He claimed that his wife never suspected a thing  8)

There's only one bike-related thing my wife can't stand, and that is surprise packages in the post, as that smacks of hiding the purchase from her. Of course, if I wanted to hide it, I would get it delivered to my work address!  ;)

She is fine with most things, as long as I tell her up front. And she does get to benefit as well:

After riding 60 lovely km around Buckingham yesterday on her beloved nobbly-tyred MTB, she complained about her bike being slow on the road, and having difficulty keeping up with me, and that she would have to cancel her plans for LEJOG, as she'd never be able to manage it.   :'(

Today, while she was out, I set up my drop-barred Alfine-geared Amazon to fit her, and lo and behold, it's a lot quicker, and she loves it! Planning LEJOG is back on!  :-*

She did mention that if felt a bit excessive to have 2 bikes, a mountain bike, and a road bike.   :-[

Until I pointed out that she shouldn't forget the folder, which made 2 already, so now she has 3...  Education on the benefits of N+1 is underway!   :demon:
