Uploading Maps to eTrex H
« on: 27 April, 2009, 08:31:15 pm »
I have a .img (for New York state). How do I upload this to my eTrex H. Googling suggests switching to USB mode but I don't appear to have this option on the menus (and suspect it's only available on the Hcx model)

You can't - there's no way of adding maps to the H.

It's not an eTrex H.

Well it's this one Garmin eTrex Legend Blue so it has 'base maps', but lacks routing and has a USB cable (from the picture at least). It should arrive at the weekend!.

You should be able to import them with Mapsource. How I'm not sure as I don't have a mapping GPS.

It may be possible to import your img files into Mapsource using cGPSmapper** and MapSetToolKit. Actually the latter is just a GUI front-end for the former, which does all the work.

** downloadable in several versions ranging from 'free' to 'several thousand pounds'.  I recommend downloading the free version!

From Mapsource you can transfer the map to the GPS.
If you have a PC but don't have Mapsource, is is apparently possible to trick Garmin's download page into providing it, a tutorial for that is here.
