Irans a very civilized country it's just its current government that's a bit mad.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

The view it's just the Iranian government that's mad is backed up by Colin Thubron's account of Iran in is amazing book The Shadow of the Silk Road. During his whole journey across the country he encounters incredible displays of hospitality and generosity. I'd really like to visit the place.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Like America under the Bush regime, then! :)

A chap in the department has been to Iran twice in recent years.  He says it's an amazing country, the food is great and the people are very friendly and not at all anti-West.  Of course, he would have spoken to the educated, who are more likely to be liberal, as his Farsi is pretty rudimentary (mine is none existent of course!).  I believe Ahmadinejad has his power base amongst the rural poor.

Anyway, hopefully in another 10 or 20 years Iran will open up and we can go and visit.

ljerams: I believe there are ways around the country restriction for iPlayer.  A quick Google should reveal some methods, some of which might actually work! :)

This Iranian government is no more mad than the last one, but that's a discussion for another day.  Although I have never been to the country, I have met a number of ex-pat Iranians in various settings, and I have found them inveriably generous, hospitable and caring, if a bit loud ;D

The BBC seem to have found a way to stop proxies accessing iPlayer. So far Google website suggestions appear not to work, for me at least :demon:
