Peered out of the window this morning to see none of the cars were frosty or iced up on the window so dialled back on the layers a bit. Arrived at work less sweaty as a result.

Saw a rider with bar mittens like these:

Sometimes in the seventies you'd see mopeds with a set-up like that.

The heavens appeared to have sprung a leak this evening, which was unexpected and unwelcome.  Fortunately I was suitably attired.

Rants to appear in the relevant thread.

It is rain.
It isn't snow.
Be thankful.

-8.5 on the way in this morning. Brr.
-8.7 on the way home.

(I see Garmin Connect truncates the decimal places on the temperature log rather than retaining the original data or rounding it.)

I wondered what the funny noise was on the bike recently but just put it down to drivetrain grumbles, the big ring has at least one broken tooth. It transpires that particular noise wasn't the drivetrain, this became evident when the left hand pedal spindle snapped this morning and the noise went away.

Going to be a slow ride home.

This made me chuckle (because of the way it was written, not schadenfreude). How was the homeward trip?
What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

It was +9°C this morning, which was substantially warmer than the +1°C of yesterday morning, although it didn't feel like that at 5am, when I needed to get out of bed!

It has actually gotten duller, since then.  A slight haze earlier on has been replaced by a more substantial haze, that basically makes the world all a bit dull and grey, with absolutely no sign of the sun. :(

It is dry though, so not all bad.
Actually, it is rocket science.

This morning was clear and uncold for my commute but, within half an hour of arrival, fog had settled- the sort of fog that feels like walking through the mist created by a pinhole leaking hose.

Not much fog as I set off, but somewhat thicker as I went past Gatwick. A nice surprise to see Steph striding down the footway, looking good.  Several motorists in unlit cars, which coupled with the fashion for grey paint didn't seem the best choice. (OTOH I did see them).  Actually chatted with another cyclist as I went past the former Royal Earlswood Hospital on the cycle path, badly covered in chutney. He warned me that my pannier was about to fall off, but I explained it wasn't, it was an Altura laptop case and mounts on the piss to give heel clearance.

Well.  I've had colder rides to work in mid-summer. It's bonkers.

Walking out to my bike in the rain, after a work day three hours longer than normal, is not the time I wanted to discover a flat rear tyre :(
I couldn't find any reason for the flat either.

Yup, and last week I had a commute, which was probably the coldest one for three years!

I suppose that UK weather being a bit random and unpredictable, shouldn't really be much of a surprise. ;D

<checks GPS log>

Steady 10 on the way in, 11 on the way home.
A fair temperature swing over 2 days!

Indeed.  First ever December ride for me in sandals and shorts.

Not sure if I've ridden in sandals in December, but I definitely have in January.  In spite of the 'warm' weather I'm not using my sandals to avoid faff of changing footwear.  For now.

Given the rain here out west it wasn't a difficult decision this morning. The thought of sticking feet into squelchy socks/shoes  before going home swayed it.

Could have done with shorts this morning. Had to stop and bodge the front mech onto the big ring, the shifter is borked, I think that'll be a perma-bodge.

+1, felt awful.

On the other hand saw a lady with a lovely electric bike and someone really quick on a Brompton on the Euston Road.  Unfortunately he also decided to bounce every red light he saw, so great legs but a bit of a twat.
