How to live without a fridge, or a stove...
« on: 15 May, 2008, 10:48:29 pm »
That's right, you can't cook, and you have to think really hard if your friends like milk.

So, here is the proposition. Let's start a thread for food that does not need cooking.

I will accept the use of a kettle, to boil water, so some bulghur might be a start.

Ideas?

Student food: Super noodles, apples and coffee.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

If your definition of 'food' is flexible, there are all sorts of possibilities involving instant mash, pot noodles, instant soups etc.
These can form a delightful Travelodge diet...

Let's limit things to boiling water from a kettle, and no processed foods, in the modern, convenience sense.

Our larder has no constraints, and all cultures are available.

Cous cous and Ready Brek it is then.  I'm all out of ideas for lightly-warmed damp things.  No fridge means no veggies except what you've just bought...

UHT milk doesn't need refrigeration until it's been opened. Once opened you can make it last a bit longer, up to a day in summer, by wrapping the container in a tea towel and damping it down. As the water evaporates it helps cool the milk.

And you could make yogurt out of it.

Why only root veg?

Cauliflower and Broccoli are fine raw too and don't need to be kept in a fridge.

You could make a straw box out of two suitably sized cardboard boxes and a lot of polystyrene packing material.  Worked well for me in all but the hottest of weathers.

Going vegan helped, as vegetables like cool better than cold, and don't suffer as milk, butter etc do.

Dang, beaten to it.  But yes, this is what chippies, Indians etc. etc. were invented for.

Pour some boiling water into bowl, with some chocolate in another bowl above it. Stir until everything is melted. Add rice krispies or conflakes. Spoon onto a plate or in the proper cases and leave, then eat.  :)

I saw this thread title, but not the OP and thought 'we need goatpebble' - nice to see you here.

Does the title mean that the flat remodelling didn't work out?  :-\

Tinned rice pudding?  It's great cold.

I hope we've got a tin opener.
