Before the new shopping centre, Didcot's citizens had to travel as far as Abingdon to buy essentials, like new underpants and socks. Now they can do that at their new Supermarket. This explains the demise of Abingdon.
In a desperate last ditch attempt to stop the rot, Abingdon council installed a new traffic system to ensure that Didcot people that actually made it as far as Abingdon could never escape the town in their lifetime. This it seems has been partially successful... however, as the visitors cannot find anywhere to park, they are still in their cars and not in the shops. This also helps to explain the demise of Abingdon.
