Perm 200 Suggestions near Oxford
« on: 16 June, 2008, 07:35:54 pm »

I have run out of weekends in july without booking myself a 200 for RRTY. Can anyone suggest a good Perm I can do near Oxford during the week?

Nik Windle's Poor Student 200.

Nik Windle's Poor Student 200.

That is as distinct possibility. I am intending to do the Poor Student in January as the last one of my twelve though. I guess there is no harm in a repeat...

I think I'm going to have to upgrade this to Perm 300 suggestions. I need to build up to this 600 in september :-)

My first thoughts are Cheddar Gorge or The Dean. Which one should I go for? (I'll be doing this on a Brompton.)

PS If anyone fancys coming along, that would also be great!

The CG 300 is a bootiful ride, and really not very hard, despite the AAA point! I reckon it's easier than the Dean.

Phil's Upper Thames 200 could be DIY-ified (it goes right round Oxford, so you must be somewhere on route if you are "near Oxford" ).

The Heart-of-England 300 is very nice AND easy, and could be permified (it passes through Woodstock).

Both the Cheddar Gorge and the Dean are nice rides.  I'd recommend both.

The main difference is that the Dean is more consistently lumpy, which means the Cheddar Gorge has a section that is very hilly.  That said, the Dean has some very stiff individual climbs.

Both rides end with a flat run home.

The Marlborough Connection is also available as a perm: Woodstock (nr Oxford) - Hungerford - Wootton Bastard - Lechlade - Woodstock.  Also under the auspices of Mr Windle as John Harwood is currently in Malaysia.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I've just sent off entries for the Dean and the Poor Student. I might be a bit later riding them than I thought though, as I'll wait for feeling to come back to my little fingers after yesterday's Wednesday Wander...
