1" Aheadset steel 700C forks for less than a ton?
« on: 07 March, 2011, 11:26:28 am »
I recently (read last year) bought a Raliegh frame from this 'ere forum.  It has had threaded forks on it (and indeed the seller did provide me with them) but I would rather go with aheadset ones.

So I toddled down to the LBS on Saturday, to find that there are plenty of headsets available (Cane Creek and some other make) but the forks are £100 and above..... eeeek

So does anyone know where I can get forks with the following spec from?
Steel
700C
Aheadset 1"
caliper brake mount.

Surly Steamroller Hack Bike forks.

Out of stock at wiggle: Wiggle | Surly Steamroller Hack Bike Forks Forks but only £70, you might find them elsewhere.

If my experiences with the Karate Monkey 29er and 1x1 26er forks are any indication then you'd be hard-put to go wrong with the Surly forks, although sometimes their colour choices are a bit, erm, unorthodox (although I got lucky - both the KM and 1x1 forks are black :) )

I have 1" Ahead Steamroller forks on two of my fixies - bought from the USA via eBay; they can be found and they are very good indeed.

Problem the first: this is an expensive way to buy forks (with postage and duty, it was about £90 each).
Problem the second: they come in any colour you like as long as it's black (which is, to be fair, a fine and sensible colour for a bike).
Problem the third: no mudguard eyelets (I ended up getting some added and having them powdercoated).

As the frame only cost me £40, I think the SJS ones Charlotte linked to are just the job!

thanks

There's someone in York flogging a pair of Kona P2s on the CTC forum:

Probably for 26" wheels, but you never know.

Kona still do a 700c version of the P2, just to confuse matters  ;D
However, there's a better than even chance that they're flogging the MTB version - if I had a suitable frame for them I'd be tempted myself.

I know they do a 700c version - that's why I suggested it :)

I agree, it's more likely to be the 26" version, though.  There may even be a version out there with a 1 1/8" steerer - the advert is a bit vague.

I know that they used to, but wasn't sure if they still did - evidently they do, and the 2011 version looks rather tasty indeed.

I think P2's have always been 1 1/8", either threaded on threadless. The OP wants 1".

I've a pair of P2s with a 1" steerer.  They are available.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works, but you want to think about the amount of offset or rake with any new forks.  It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the current ones, but bear in mind that any increase in offset will make the steering more twitchy (counter-intuatively).

There were some sub £100 carbon as well as steel 1" forks available, last time I looked.

Indeed: CSN Carbon/Alu Road Forks currently on sale at £71.96

I paid only £67 for my 1 1/8" threadless carbon forks (with mudguard eyes) thanks to that sale at Ribble.

I agree with the first point, and am hoping the offset will be roughly about the same (there doesn't seem to be anything outstanding untoward about the forks that came with the frame).

As for your second point, I know but carbon forks on this particular frame would be just WRONG.... :)

Why not just get an aheadset converter?
Any fool can admire a mountain.  It takes real discernment to appreciate the fens.

Certainly an "Ahead" stem can be used via a converter, but maybe tiermat wants a proper threadless headset (?).

Because I have used them on my last two builds and don't want to go down that route again. Yes they are handy, but mounting a Thorn accessory bar(for example) is a pain.

A Thorn? You'll need a couple (of packs) of these. ;)
