I've just been researching Australian comedy and rediscovered Norman Gunston, a long forgotten progenitor of Borat.

He isn't forgotten in Australia! Several of my Aussie friends spotted the influence of Gunston on people like acts like Dennis Pennis and Borat some time back... he was a bit of a wayward genius.

He was first shown in the UK on the Clive James show in about '75 in the original manifestation he was studio based and guests were invited to take a selection from the 'pie bar', one of those things you see in bakers. I was pleased to see him on Youtube after all these years.

Garry McDonald was terrific in "Mother and Son".  One of my all time favorites.

The poor guy suffered from mental illness, like many comic geniuses.  I think that Norman was his finest creation, and his interviews on parliament steps during the constitutional crisis was his finest hour.
