£5700 Impulse buy !!
« on: 07 July, 2011, 02:27:23 pm »
Saw this on EBAY and was amazed

Quote
54cm 2011 Roubaix S Works SL3 (the spec is below).

I have used it twice and it has done less than 200 miles. The bike is like new. The only way that you can tell it is not new is slight discolouring of the bar tape.

I purchased the bike on impulse. My friends all want to go mountain biking so it does not get used.

As far as I understand the 54cm 2011 Roubaix S Works are all sold out. They retail between £5500 and £5700. I am looking to get above £4000.

Is this a sign of the times?  Someone wants to start cycling and so goes out and buys the "Best Bike" money can buy?  £5700 is quite an impulse.

I know the (rather lovely) village where it's located and it makes me think this is genuine and not stolen.

Also, >£4000 for a second-hand bike off Ebay..err, no thanks.

I might have an impulse to buy a £5700 bike, but not the means to translate impulse into action.

If you've got the money...

I'm sure that when I was younger I've spent a far higher proportion of my net worth on stuff I didn't really need or appreciate.

For some people 6k is pocket money.

I did once cash a Giro for two weeks' money, and walk home via the second hand bookshop, arriving home with £0.00.

It was a very hungry fortnight. ;D

I now have visions of a much younger Clarion being found by social services, alone and emaciated, after having pleasured himself half to death with nothing but a stack of Razzle magazines and an almost empty box of tissues to his name.

Fortunately, I know him to be a classier chap.  It was probably Victorian erotic fiction...

And a pile of soiled silk cravats ....
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

If he can afford the car behind the bike in the ebay page he might be able to waste a few grands.

Why not.

I spent £1200 on Italian suit in 1989. I was 19 years old and maybe a bit mad though. It was a very nice suit, doubt I'll be doing that again.

Odd. Why spend so much money on a bike which only comes in sizes 'S', 'M', or 'L'?

He doesn't seem to be getting a vast number of bids on that auction.

£4000 strikes me a bit optimistic, even if it is in perfect condition, since you will no longer be able to easily make any sort of demands on the manufacturer, should the frame fall into bits, or the bike suffer any other major fault.
Actually, it is rocket science.

How often does your height change?

Fair point. Very, very slowly I suppose. I just expect more for that sort of money!

You mean you expect a bike to get larger the more you spend on it?  :o

Yep, I paid £1000 for a "Peugeot 753 Chorus" around 1990 (and lovely it was too). Married, mortgage, working wife and no kids.
