Essex seem to be having a disastrous start to the season. Last week they lost by 10 wickets to Warks and they are now following on v Northants.

I haven't followed the results in any great detail, but I recall last season the expression "Fortress Chelmsford" being bandied about because they hadn't lost at home for something like 3 years. I think that run is likely to end with the current match.

Looking at their results so far this season they played out a dead match with Kent in which well over 1000 runs were scored but only 20 wickets taken, and scraped home against Somerset by one wicket, being 84/9 in their second innings.

And Essex batted out time and managed a draw.

Which they have to do again today. The two first innings totalled well over 800 runs and took 3 days. A collapse by Essex would see a Yorkshire win. They have to bat out two sessions today to be safe, I think. Should manage that as it seems to be a very batsman-friendly pitch. I think a win for Essex is vanishingly unlikely.

It's the Duke's balls apparently.

And according to most bowlers this season - he can have them back.

Yay England won a test

It got me thinking on broad and Anderson. My general feeling is on any day Anderson is a better more consistent bowler but when Broad is on one of his fired up days he is much more of a threat

I'm not a particularly avid fan of cricket - my interest these days is almost exclusively limited to England tests, and even then only when they're doing OK - but the bereft feeling I woke up with this morning was similar to that I've woken up to in the past, on the morning after the final stage of a particularly good TdeF.

Well, there’s only two and a bit weeks to go before the TdF starts, though how it'll measure up to Nuncio's goodness standards…

The euphoria over the cricket result remains (mine included).  But, now that a few days have elapsed, I feel it may just about be safe to stick one's head over the parapet and reduce future expectations slightly:  Kane Williamson, the Kiwis captain, didn't play because of covid, which seems to have affected some of those who did play, within hours of the game finishing. Kane Williamson is the best batsman in the world.  It will be interesting to see if England, having won the series, experiment with inexperienced players like the Overton twins.  If they do, and Williamson plays, we might expect a tonking, I think.  That won't affect the beautiful memories!

You're out of date.

Ha!  I wasn't out of date at 1.06pm, when I wrote the post!  He wouldn't have been demoted if he had played in the test at Trent Bridge, I think - in fact, it's just possible that NZ would have batted to 700!

Still euphoric, though!

Indeed.  I have just watched it.  Players from both sides all looked a bit incredulous.  Never heard of that happening before though something similar must have happened in the past, somewhere.

We seem to be slow starters. Mind you Bairstow had a couple of lucky moments.

Outstanding though.

I've stumbled across some sort of "Vitality Blast" match being broadcast live on youtube from Chelmsford. The opponents are Surrey.

One of the Essex fielders pulled off one of those amazing catches where he took the ball just inside the rope, knew he was going to step outside, chucked the ball up and dived back onto the pitch, completing the catch.
