Goldtec bolt cup things
« on: 14 October, 2012, 09:16:27 pm »
I've managed to crack the little cup thing that the bolt sits in on my rear Goldtec track hub.  This isn't the first time.  Is it just me or are they a bit shit?

They're shit and expensive.  Just use s/s penny washers.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Thanks.

Can you crank them really tight?

(p.s. next time you are over this way I'll let you have a go on my carbon fixie  ;)  )

That happened to mine, so I bought some stainless steel washers and use those now.
I use two washers because I like to do my wheels up tight so I don't pull them over. I've totaly warped the washers now.

Mine failed as well.

I fabricated a couple of penny washers from a bit of 2mm stainless steel sheet. I had intended to make 4, but the usual loveable ??? characteristics of s/s meant that it work-hardened enough to trash the hole saw before the third was complete.

I presume the sheet was annealed, since the washers became a bit conical. I have reversed them a few times, in the hope that work-hardening will set in eventually. After 27 000 miles they survive, but don't seem to have stiffened yet. I think it's called travelling hopefully ;).
