The Lavender Hill Mob, yesterday afternoon.  Bliss.

This afternoon: Three Colours - White.

I enjoyed this more than Blue but I don't think I have quite got my head round it yet...

It is interesting to spot odd corresponding scenes. Looking forward to Red, hopefully tomorrow if the weather is poor.

Last night I watched a DVD of Black Moon Rising with Tommy Lee Jones and some other people. It was dire. I don't know why we inflicted this on ourselves but I note on Amazon that it rates almost 5 stars so perhaps there are nuances that I am missing.

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol.  I enjoyed it, turn your brain off, and watch Tom Cruise sprint around. It was big advert for Apple and their various products though.
Not particularly recommended, but good for a couple hours fun escapism. Did have the usual USia sickly sentimental ending though.
Absolutely everything you would expect from a MI film: fast paced cliffhangers, impossible stunts, great locations. Turn brain off, sit back and enjoy.

Grizzly Man.

Would have equally worked with a comma between the two words in the title.

Werner Herzog is just a great director, who manages to create superb films exploring individuals whose obsession takes them beyond where sane people would feel comfortable.

Great, thought-provoking film that picks up on the Man & Nature theme that also runs through Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre.  Good (Richard Thompson) soundtrack too - well-covered by one of the DVD extras.

Great Documentary film but "Wierd Man" would have been more apt.

Great Documentary film but "Weird Man" would have been more apt.

But that would cover most of Herzog's central characters ....

Patagonia.

A wonderful film about two (unrelated) quests, one in Wales, one in Patagonia. One looking for a future, the other looking for the past.
It's well acted and brilliantly filmed. Slow-paced and thoughtful, It's a change from the usual frantic stuff.

For those who understand Welsh, and haven't seen it, it's a must.

For the rest, Although the dialogue is in Welsh and Spanish (with Welsh subtitles), it's still worth watching. After all, cinema is a visual medium.

Rare Exports - A Christmas Tale.

Really nicely shot, and deliciously dark and creepy without being OTT on the gore. Weird.

The Fighter

Good film with a great performance from Christian Bale.

Yes, it was excellent.  Top notch fight scenes and some fine film acting from Bale and Wahlberg.

With disbelief mostly intact, I'm sorry to say.

I thought it was good, although I'm not sure if my experience was diminished or enhanced by the bloke in front of me shouting "Pussy, you're a pussy" and collapsing with laughter when Lisbeth bests Bjurman.

Deep Blue Sea, the film-of-the-Terrence Rattigan play, with Rachel Weisz.  Rachel Weisz was great.

It was all a bit Anna Karenin, unsurprisingly, but riveting, and they had tried hard to replicate the symbolism of the stage version, into the film.  Crusty was ready to spork himself in the eye by the end.  I loved it.  Except the music, which made its point too well, and too often.

And the funny thing is, we've been talking about it ever since, as there was so much in it that was real - fear of being lonely, hopeless first love, infatuation.

On the whole, 7/10.

Rare must see film recommendation. Brand new Black and White silent (mostly), accompanied by music. Film going back to basics, i.e. tell a good story well, don't need noisy explosions, SFx, over saturated colors, gimmicky 3D. Georgeous filmography.

Very good indeed.

Recommended. Just go watch.

Inglourious Basterds, third time I've seen it. Now one of my favourite films.

+1

Uncomplicated tale, very well told  :)

Spot on down to what seems to be the correct aspect ratio for the era.
