True Grit

The latest version.

I'd been meaning to see this for a while and I've no idea if I wasn't disappointed.

Michael Collins (1996)

Somehow I'd manage to miss this one.  Historical inaccuracies overshadowed by Alan Rickman doing the most conspicuously half-arsed attempt at an accent since Sean Connery's masterpiece in Hunt For Red October.  Otherwise a respectably decent film.

He made an even more half-arsed attempt at looking like him. But his accent wasn't all that bad compared with the original:

After ~3:30 he's speaking English.

I'm trying to recall who Rickman was in it.  De Valera?  (yes I could look it up)

I recall that being a pretty decent fillum (see what I did there ;) )
It's a reverse Elvis thing.

Rickman was a fine actor - but surely a little chunky to play an astronaut?

Passengers

A poorly-written story in which our hero selflessly chooses to devote her existence to fulfilling her stalker's whim in order to ensure the safety of a spaceship with over 5000 hibernating people on board.  As a metaphor for abusive relationships it falls short.  As a sci-fi romance it's just creepy.

Pretty graphics, dodgy physics, enough design flaws to keep the RISKS Digest going for weeks and a conspicuous absence of a plot twist.

I inspected an off-site backup of this one so you don't have to.

I too have tested an off-site backup, and my views haven't changed from when we saw it at the cinema: (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6884.msg2117238#msg2117238).

On the small-screen, not even the CGI can save it. I think I may delete it.
You better not delete it. I objectify Chris Pratt AND JLaw.

Gnomeo and Juliet.  It's pretty brilliant, really.

Masterminds
I'd never heard of this, it's a generic Zach G / Jason S / Owen W / Kristen Wig number. Mr Smith obtained an offsite backup for us to check.

We were howling with laughter. Apparently it's based on a true story.  :o

Get out:
A mildly scary very uncomfortable film which managed to fit the horror genre without being a gore fest or going for the tired shock scare. I enjoyed it.

Moana:
Disney at its best - fantastic, loved it. I am a sucker for the Disney / Pixar animations, but this is amongst the best they have done. Beautiful imagery and wonderful feel good  (If predictable as disney) story.

Jackie:
Interesting but not excessively engaging. Natalie Portman though is brilliant, a well deserved Oscar nomination.

Logan, at the cinematic projection location all by meself (MrsC being away and it not being her sort of fillum)

If you are into these sort of films, best one ever. Considerable nods in the direction of classic westerns.

Watched Lucy last night, mildly entertaining in a Matrix style "take the blue drugs" kind of way, as long as you suspended all connection with reality, which was kinda the point.

Also watched a Coli Firth 20's set rom-com thingy where he's a magician set up to expose a con-artist, but the setter-upperer is also trying to set him up, with the inevitable romantic entanglement at the end. You could see it coming, but still entertaining enough.

Logan is on my list.

Why not a remake of Logan's Run - Logan's Run 2 - The Gentle Shuffle Into Retirement

Ignore the plot - although there are some good laughs - but save your admiration for the music at the end.

I'd queue to see that lineup.

I've left it playing and am ignoring the plot.
They have just rocked up at a creepy house with gators in the grounds.

The music is certainly worth having on.
Wow. You are right, it's a hell of a lineup.
BB King just put in an appearance.
And James Brown is wrapping it up in the credits.

OK that was so worth it for the music.

'Apocalypse Now'.  Bizarrely reassuring for all the wrong reasons.

next on the list is 'Gangs of New York'.

Well I know Nicholas Cage has a reputation for guff films but really...

We just flicked over to channel 5 as we were a bit bored with Come Dine With Me to watch an hour or so of 'Left Behind' (2014).

Well it was certainly a lesson in just how bad a film can get. Just wow.

Upthread. I put myself through the Nic Cage catalogue so the rest of you didn't have to.

A Few Good Men

I'd forgotten the plot twist at the end, never actually seen it from the beginning before. Tom Cruise acts as in any other TC film. Demi Moore. Hubba hubba... <dribbles>

Anthropoid

True story about an assassination plot in WW2 Czechoslovakia. Good film, but oh boy was it harrowing and violent in places. I found it very uncomfortable.

Is that the one that's about the assassination of Heydrich?  I want to see that.  Upthread I commented about watching a Polish film called Warsaw which was all about the Warsaw Uprising towards the end of WWII.  Gutwrenching at times but worth it overall.
