I've been looking at some more specs recently and it's interesting that SSD power consumption isn't always lower than 2.5" HDD, even when idle, and most SSDs don't have a standby mode, unlike HDDs. It doesn't necessarily equate to SSD speed.
For example, OCZ Agility 3 SSD (an older "budget" model that you might get second-hand): 1.5 W idle, 2.7 W active.
OCZ Vertex 3 SSD: 1.65 idle, 3 W active.
Seagate 2.5"
HDD: 1.2 - 1.5 W "average operating power".
WD Green 2.5"
HDD: 0.2 W standby, 0.8 W idle, 1.7 W active.
But some SSDs are very good on this score, eg.
www.Sandisk.co.uk/products/ssd/sata/standard/?capacity=64GB - 50 mW active. And the Samsung 850 Pro I just got has a 2 mW standby mode (and a 10 year warranty!).
