Another Pi question
« on: 11 November, 2015, 04:13:47 pm »
I've just bought a new Smart TV and want to hook up the audio to my HiFi.  However, the TV has Optical and HDMI outputs, not phono.  My amp (Cambridge A1(?)) only has phono inputs.

However, I have a Raspberry Pi running Kodi which I've used in the past for playing ripped CDs and downloaded TV programmes.  If I put one of the DACs identified in Hairy Hippy's recent thread, I can get some good quality phono output.  For this to work, I'm assuming the HDMI connection between the Pi and the TV carries audio in both directions.  Is this correct?

Probaby easier to get a little optical to RCA phono DAC. They are about £20. I got one for Pcolbeck juniors  XBox.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Late reply, it's been a bit busy. I'll need at DAC for the Pi anyway, so I can run it without the TV on and connect it to the amp.  Looking at the spec of the TV, one of the HDMI sockets has ARC (Audio Return Channel) which sounds like it does exactly what I need.  Otherwise, yes, a separate optical to RCA DAC will be the next step.
