< 2MB USB memory stick
« on: 02 September, 2016, 01:15:22 pm »
I need a low capacity USB memory to copy files from a Tektronix Oscilloscope

'Note. The oscilloscope can only support flash drives with a capacity of 2 MB or less'

I have even tried partitioning a modern drive using fdisk ... no joy..
Would anyone have an old one gathering dust in a drawer ?

32MB is the smallest I seem to have, sorry :(

I was going to post that I do but it's 2Gb not 2Mb.  Blimey that is old.

Are we sure that's not a typo for 2GB?  2MB seems like an odd size limit for a USB storage device, and if that was the state of the art at the time I'd expect them to use a much more convenient floppy disk drive.

Did you format the partition as FAT16?

Have you tried a <2GB stick?  Again, possibly with a FAT16 partition.

The other thing to try is formating the USB drive in the Oscilloscope if thats possible. I have had weird issues with USB drives on equipment before where they didn't recognize USB drives that they should but were OK once I reformatted the drive in said device.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I don't remember USB sticks being smaller than 16MB as floppy disks could do 1.44MB so 2MB wouldn't be worth it for solid state.

Yes.  Things could be strangely fussy about formatting of flash memory in those days.  I remember bringing some CF cards that the Psion5 couldn't use back to life by formatting them in a camera.

Yes 2GB is the limit (in theory) but 'twas always a fussy beast, I  did have a couple of small drives that worked but one is borked and the other lost. ???

Found  firmware upgrade that claims it capable of reading a whopping 64GB  I was in catch22..

Workaround was to use a 256MB SD card in a reader, and format it  in the instrument it's now updating  firmware..

Then after a reboot to new firmware it chirpily tells me that  my 1 GB drive is unsupported.. too large.. back to SD card for saving screen shots... happy days.. :)

Well there's a 2Gb stick here you're welcome to.  Lovely beasts Tek scopes, I miss the days they featured in my daily life.

I think I've got a 512Mb stick somewhere if that's worth a try.

How about a floppy disk with a USB powered drive?

I have a 1 GB USB stick (1.0 of course) which I don't use. It's a tiny tiny Sony one, without the usual casing but a little soft plastic thing it slots into. But I'm not sure about parting with it, because although I don't use it I quite like it as an object.

I've just found a 16MB memory stick which you can have if you like.
I'm not sure they ever came smaller than that...
