More Harry Quinning. I fitted the bars and brakes. Relatively straightforward until I found that the front brake cable outer I had threaded through the bars was an inch too short, no matter how much I tried to get it to fit. Cue much cursing before I cut a new length and fitted that. The (white) bar tap needs a bit of TLC now, but all is in situ. I was tempted to put the wheels on to try how it rolls, but it was getting dark by then AND there aren't any tyres fitted!

... Some percussive persuasion got the cups into place ...

For future reference, I have a headset press.  :)

I don't, but a carpenters cramps work well for setting a headset bearing.
And with a little more care and delicacy, so does a 2kg lump hammer moved with appropriate precision and care.

Spent two hours wrangling a laser cutter to no productive effect. However it was a useful learning experience. The smell in my office afterwards of burned plastic was not most pleasant.

Fitted card readers to a couple of PCs (with associated fan cleaning) and botched up barakta's dungarees with some botch wire.

Fitted a new brake cable to the front of the Horizon to replace the rather old original and retensioned the chain on the Trek District in case I decide to take that one audaxing tomorrow.

The new cable fitting took forever as I'm not used to setting up straddle wires properly and it seems to be a job designed for about 4 hands.

Oh, also gave both bikes a bit of a clean with some wet wipes

Cleaned my bike!

This is a sure sign of:

(b) End of World
(c) brain tumour
(d) senility.

(Students should select one or more or possibly fewer option(s) and correct the grammar.)

Lights.

Picked up a couple of Supernova lights (tail light for the Fortitude fixed, E3 Pro2 for the Croix de Fer) and an eWerk dynamo cable from the LBS a couple of days ago. Fitting the light to the Croix de Fer was relatively straightforward, but fitting the tail light on the Fortitude required some soldering and heatshrink - routing the tail light cable along the rear brake hose turned out to be surprisingly neat.

Either way, jobs done - I now have an off-road capable dynamo powered lighting/charging system on the Fortitude, a semi bad-ass headlight (and optional GPS charging capability) on the Croix de Fer and absolutely no solder-related burns.

There will be a Sugru hack on the Croix's dynamo connector at some point in order to make sure that water etc. stays out.

I've built my first rear wheel and installed a 28mm tubeless tyre setup.  Will be test riding tomorrow.

After getting intimate with some of the finer points of NTP yesterday, I've spent the last few hours writing code to drive a 7-segment LED display.  It's been a while since I've fettled one of those, but it's a vital aspect of the "1980s mission control"[1] aesthetic I'm going for with barakta's new alarm clock.  (Needless to say, it will also feature a large red 'abort' button.)  Freakishly, it worked first time.

Banned from using Nixie tubes? I trust divorce proceedings are now underway, unreasonable behaviour and all that. Barakta has always seemed like such a nice girl too  :(

To be fair, the ban was specific to her bedside clock.  I can have as many Nixies as I like somewhere else (with the disclaimer that I shouldn't start any more projects until I've finished this one).

Nixie tubes - if there were such a thing as a hipster component, they'd be it.

Never seen the attraction myself, but then I'm a sucker for OLED screens.

decided that Campag Xenon is cheese that isn't supposed to do more than decorate low end bikes. Broke the shift lever and now the rear mech is somewhat ambiguous about gear changes. Time to search out a decent upgrade.

With daughter & son-in-law, o.ver the weekend:

  • Cut a 150mm wide x 4 metre slot through a 150mm thick concrete slab (9" diamond angle grinder & impact drill FTW) to lay a drainage channel.
  • Concreted in the plastic (with metal cover) drain channel
  • Dug soak away and 5 metre pipe trench, filled them and re-covered.
  • Layed a dozen sq metres of slabs.
  • Used the 2 m3 of soil from soak-away & trench to start consructing a sloped path instead of a random-height-stepped one.
  • Dug out 4 large bushes.

i.e. We worked bloody hard and are now knackered.  :smug:

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...
