Oh my!

I'm guessing that it is a real fracture, not a virtual one...
It is simpler than it looks.

Well that is a bit of a bugger.

I've heard of sympathetic pregnancies, but sympathetic fractures is taking it too far.

Update

GN: I will get full pay while I'm off (I can't believe it took them 6 weeks to decide this)
MGN: So will Mr Smith
EMGN: Mr Smith (jnr) is not working at the moment, but full time OU studying so has very kindly volunteered to come stay with us
YMGN: Yes, that is the son who's a chef

BN: No speedy resolution for Mr Smith (snr), lots of painkillers and some physio guidelines until next x-ray next Thursday. "we can't operate or even determine whether to operate yet as there's so much trauma in there"
?N: Mr Smith may never be able to OHP again. He'd maybe just taken some DRUGS but seemed ridiculously cheered by this.

Having seen Mr Smith's 4+ [ETA reviewing the pic, I see at least 7 fragments] part proximal humerus fracture on Facebook (I presume that makes it not very confidential?) it looks pretty ouch and I don't know if anyone would try to screw that together.
The good news is that the fracture has mostly spared the articular surface of the humerus, so future mobility might be fair.

Looks like a long and painful business…

Edit: also, our mains pipes have nowhere convenient to attach a hose. Even the taps are all the wrong shape - although I'm no expert in tap connectors. It may be that someone has designed something for mixer taps etc.

I've had experience of various creative hose attachments for wrong-shaped taps over the years, and can assure you that they're all crap.
I just ran a hose in from the outside tap.

We don't have an outside tap...

We have A Man In in response to an insurance claim regarding a leak. He's found one - it wasn't that hard when he knew where to look. A crack in a 97-year-old lead pipe. He's cut that out and is replacing a load of stuff with plastic. Apparently modern plastic pipes can withstand 12 bar of pressure.

Our Man has gone, and hopefully so has the leak.

The two rooms adjacent to the leak, one of which is the kitchen, show no sign internally of any damp at all. When we had these rooms decorated we made sure the external walls were lined with a damp-proof plaster board. It has worked very well. The good news about that is that the internal decor is undamaged. The bad news is that we didn't notice the leak for quite some time.

BN My erbaeur combi drill died last night. Battery ok, switch ok (well, the light came on), but motor absolutely dead. No sound, no smell, nothing.
BN It is out of warranty
BN Can't order the same model, it is buy in store only. That's annoying - the batteries and charger are still fine.

GN: I managed to book a test drive in a car I’m interested in for a convenient time tomorrow.
BN: On my way home this evening my car informed me of a loss of pressure in the front left tyre.
GN: I got home ok without major drama
BN: A brief inspection showed a screw through the tread.
GN: It was in a repairable position
MGN: My neighbour was just arriving home, so I asked for the details of his mobile tyre bloke.
EMGN: I called the guy at 5pm, he arrived at 6pm, and was all done by 6:15pm

Excellent service from PMK Tyres of Aylesbury (Connor is the guy’s name).
Oooh! I'll note that in case anything happens to Mrs B on days when she works in Aylesbury. And I'll pass it on to my family members with boats there.

A couple of weeks ago I went to the GP because my right hand was borked. A little graze hadn't healed for ages, then I got a local infection & was prescribed antibiotics, but although it was no longer hot, I still had stiff, swollen fingers, with red blotches turning scabby, itching like mad & sore bits.

She said infection over, or nearly so. I have Raynaud's. My fingers were in trouble because their blood supply was. Fuck!

I've always had a tendency to cold hands & feet, & need gloves when many others don't, but never anything remotely like this before.

Good news: doing what she said to has resulted in a big improvement. Looks as if she was right. At least I know now.
If you have Raynaud's then in this cold weather remember to keep your hands really well moisturised.  As the humidity drops in the cold the skin becomes more likely to cricket the keratin outer layer leading to the painful small non-healing wounds we all know about.
Secondly If you truly have Raynaud's (most people don't) then Viagra may well be useful.  I tend to prescribe it a bit like smarties in this weather.

When I say most people do not have raynauds, they may have been told by a GP or even a rheumatologist that they have but when I see photographs about 50% of people simply have a slightly more severe reaction to cold than normal.
GP said to keep moisturising. Was going to prescribe some fancy moisturiser until I told her Mrs B collects it, & we have lots. My right hand was a bit dry & scaly, so I've been madly moisturising.

Still got a new cracked bit yesterday.

Get a pair of white cotton gloves of the type worn by snooker referees and a hyooooge pot of emollient ointment. Prior to going to sleep slather your hands with the ointment and put on the gloves. The ointment will do its work overnight.

Technical bit - fold the gloves halfway inside out, so the hand bit is folded back over the fingers it is then easier to get them on with massively gooped-up hands by sticking your fingers in the finger holes of both gloves then using gloved fingers to fold the bottom part of each glove down to cover the rest of your hands.

good advice by Clare.

Also a tube of superglue gel is useful.  As soon as you get a crack put a drop of the superglue gel in and then some water to activate it and it will seal the edges and make it less painful.
