It's quite funny.

Ice Age 4 "Continental Drift", which was about on a par with the rest of the franchise.  The same sort of easy humour, with a bit more of a bent towards teenagers with Peaches, than the earlier films.  Overall OK, but not exceptional.

As ever Scrat makes several appearances, being blamed for the creation of the continental plates in a possibly not entirely geophysically accurate piece. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

Village of the Damned, the 1954 B&W version.  A pretty faithful adaptation of John Wyndham's Midwich Cuckoos .   Triggered by tidying up some old paperbacks.

I've only seen it once before, during a BBC science fiction week back in the 70's , when it was shown with Forbidden Planet, Them!, The Incredible Shrinking Man and a few others.

Pretty good for it's age.

Been watching Abe Lincoln Vamp Hunter and Safe with Jason Stratham in it. Both were very enjoyable.

The Hobbit. I thought it was a distinct improvement over the Lord of the rings movies.

Watched An American Werewolf In London last night with my 14yo son. I think I was about the same age when I first watched it, and I found it mostly terrifying. He found it mostly hilarious.  ::-)

Admittedly, some of the special effects haven't stood the test of time too well. It's still a great film though. And lots of it is obviously meant to be funny. Plus, if he's anything like his father, he'll have appreciated Jenny Agutter's contribution to the film, though we didn't actually discuss that aspect of it.

We also watched Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows the day before yesterday. Not as good as the first one - the story is too incoherent and rambling, it drags on far too long, and although I'm perfectly willing to accept a certain amount of preposterousness in the name of entertainment, this film goes somewhat too far down the road of ridiculous implausibility. And Stephen Fry is awful as Mycroft.

The Hobbit. Very good, but way too long. They could have cut out quite a lot and it would have been much the better for it.

They should have left out

The Hobbit. Boring as fuck. It was so long, I even had time for a kip without missing anything.

In Bruges.

I saw that last Friday, but after the pub, so I shall need to revisit it. I do recall it being very dark, though funny.

Life of Pi.
Beautifully filmed, and true to the book, so you can decide in advance if its for you.
7 kids did well to sit through the 127mins.
Having watched it in 3D, I would suggest 2D. It reinforced my view that 3D is generally unnecessary and distracting trickery. Didn't get the 'big screen, curtains fully open' experience, but a smaller screen as per the advert size. Dunno if that's a 3D sacrifice.

I think Peter Jackson wanted to make The Hobbit a true prelude to the ultimate battle between good and evil that occurred in LOTR, rather than the straightforward excellent adventure/quest for treasure/children's story that Tolkien wrote. That would explain the Radagast scenes, as well as the scene with Galadriel, et.al. The orcs on wargs scene was a bit pointless, although I suppose it was meant to illustrate that more was at stake in this adventure than Thorin's pile of gold.

FWIW, Galadriel can show up in any part of the movie she wants to, I won't complain.

Force 10 from Navarone, much better than expected.  Edward Fox playing Edward Fox, as usual.
