The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - should be shown to all would-be film makers as an example of how to make a good film. It's as near as dammit perfectly put together.

Some may not have actually liked it (too gentle/twee perhaps) but the film itself is very sure footed, under no pretensions about what it is or wants to say. The acting by pretty much all is top notch.

St Trinian's  ;D

No idea why we watched, except perhaps it was a nice antidote to a lot of grim/worthy/toocleverbyhalf stuff consumed recently.

Anyway, it was a LOT better than feared. The first hour was particularly good (founded mainly on the traditional StT's elements), but then it peetered out a little in the inevitable modern "we need a 3rd act! Let's have some sort of farcical heist!" cliche.

And "Russel Brand - not awful"
 shock.

'A Second Chance', directed by my cousin, Susanne Bier at the BFI Festival last night.
Weird having some actors play their part in Danish and others in Swedish. (I speak neither language but understand Danish slightly better than Swedish.)
Certainly thought-provoking.

Gone Girl

Not as funny as the book.

An 18. I didn't think they made those anymore... and it earned it.

Also, the trailers were for Boy Films. I think that's because usually I only go and see Young-Adult-Dystopian-Future-Romances-With-Powerful-Female-Leads.

‘Calvary’, from the people that brought you ‘The Guard’.  It’s an interesting, if somewhat harrowing film - IMDB has this very précis précis:

“After he is threatened during a confession, a good-natured priest must battle the dark forces closing in around him”.

The writer and director wanted to take a different approach on church abuse and wanted to see the effect on a ‘good’ priest if confronted by the weight of the effect that this abuse has had on the wider society, all in a very allegorical way.  The various trailers and publicity tried to imply that it’s a black comedy in the mould of ‘The Guard’ and ‘In Bruges’ but it’s not – it’s a very stark drama and worth watching.

About a week ago we watched 'The Descendants' with George Clooney. It was very good. It seemed more European in style than American, and was one of those films that make you think. Sad though.

I found it quite amusing and there were laughs from the audience.  I am told that the ending in the book is more satisfactory than the film version.

The leg in the poster for The Graduate belongs to Linda Gray off Dallas. Just found that out and was desperate to share.

Phew! We can all sleep soundly now we finally know whose leg that was.

I know it's had me baffled....and, for some reason, not typing "leg & Graduate" into Google.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

I saw "Calvary" and thought of this extremely disturbing Belgian production:

Nothing to do with fillums but someone recently told me that the couple featured on the cover of the "Woodstock" album were world-renowned Dark Side bicycle manufacturer Gardner "Easy Racers" Martin and his wife Sandra.

Sadly it appears they were mistaken chiz.

Having read the books I have avoided the film. The books are supposed to be "I fucked up, in the worst way, hurt everyone I loved and I am really sorry about it" but are only "F*** YEAH! Look at what I did! Drugs! Hookers! Etc!"

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I have no problem with frequent full-frontal female nudity, but what's the point? Why do I care? The almost total amorality of the film leaves it teetering on the brink of being nothing more than soft porn.

I find myself wondering if I would feel the same about Goodfellas if I watched it again now.

This is exactly what I'd gleaned from the trailer and reviews :( No intention of watching it.

6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia. Imagine your worst ever English Lit lesson crossed with the most boring History and Geography lessons ever, coupled with an unedited holiday home video of someone you barely know, and that only can express a fraction of the boredom I endured during this documentary. If you liked DH Lawrence you might enjoy it, and the person who wrote it up for the BFI catalogue described it as dazzling, so there is an audience for it somewhere. However it is comfortably the least enjoyable cinema experience I've ever had.

It was made by Mark Cousins, the man who drones on in moviedrome etc, I can take him in that, but 85 mins of this doc shows that there is only so much crap I can put up with.

It could have been about Lawrence's paintings...

If you are ever there [Taos NM] again you should pop into the something-or-other Hotel where DH Lawrence's paintings are on display and which kind of suggest he was right to switch to another Day Job.

Dracula Untold - well someone has to lower the tone.

Mainly went to see this because Mr M's old school mate Luke Evans is in it. It's not bad actually, though a film about Dracula could have had more blood and gore in it for me. It was only a 15.

On an aside I saw Wolf of wall Street listed as an inflight movie a couple of months ago. The mind boggles. Surely when they had cut it to a 12 cert or whatever they do for planes, it would have been about 20 minutes long?

American Hustle

Enjoyed being along for the ride but didn't really understand much of what was going on. Not sure if that's because I was tired or because it really is a garbled mess of a film.
