Yuba, yuba!
« on: 26 August, 2008, 03:26:14 pm »
Just had a call from our postroom supervisor.  He wasn't chuffed.  Downstairs in the loading bay is the largest parcel I think have ever received.

I'm just going back down with my tools to start putting it together...

Pay attention Elleigh! ;)

It's one of these. (this one's Geraldc's, after his  incredible ride to Dunwich).

If you now have a Yuba too, I feel the need for a "pimp my yuba" competition!

Let the games begin!

Single speed or the 6?
Don't ask.

Blimey! Is Liz's leg permanently u/s then? Are you just going to strap her on the back?

I think Charlotte said something at the weekend that it was a modified version, single speed upgraded with decent gears? Can't remember. I'm sure she'll be along in a bit to let us know.

It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

That's what I like to hear: mix cycling with deviancy!  :D

.... I wonder if Charlotte would like to purchase my original condition, with bag and handbook, Sturmey Archer geared, 1975 vintage  .... Bickerton folder ... seeing as she's into *different* bikes......?

It's a bit like Parkinson's Law.  The number of bikes expands to fill the garage available.

As soon as I get it home  :)

Mind you, with six gears and 38kg all up (according to Shitty-Link) I reckon it's going to be touch and go as to whether I can haul it's massively heavy arse over the hill 'twixt here and Ealing.

Putting it together was fun.  Loads of interest down in the basement, largely amongst the geeks of the IT dept.  I think I have the drive train sorted, although the chain's almost as long as the one on my 'bent.

Are you going to strap the bike you rode in on on the back of Yuba and ride back with it?

The secret to breaking in the Yuba (or to be more accurate, breaking yourself in) is try and avoid riding other bikes for a bit until the weight of the Yuba feels normal.

I'm debating bungeeing the Brommie on the back for the ride home.

What with the rest of my luggage it shouldn't end up more than about 55Kg all up  :D

It's got to be done. I don't think Gerald has done that yet although he did talk about doing so on the FNRttC.

Will you be using this for a SR series next year?
What size gear is it?
It is fixed, isn't it? ;D

Which is, coincidentally, pretty near what I weigh.  :o

I've just had a ride on the back.  Similar to stoking the tandem only without the effort.  ;D

I know.  I can't help it  :-[

In my defence, it's one in, one out.  Margaret Hilda is being sold this weekend  :'(

Anyway - I did ride it home with the Brommie strapped on the back.  It wasn't an ideal maiden voyage, as it made everything a bit top heavy.  Here's the proof:

...and here I am riding the beast:

Liz had a go, too:

It's a bit of a mish-mash of parts, this Yuba Mundo.  The previous owner wanted a red one, but because the red one is a singlespeed and the blue one has gears, he bought a singlespeed and converted it to six speed.

It's got some home-made running boards and a seat, as well as an attempt to make a kind of stoker bar arrangement for passengers (not installed at the moment).  He's replaced the stock tyres for something thinner; I may swop them back.

I'm going to put some mudguards and a centre stand on it and maybe make up some kind of removable luggage box for the back.  Probably, I'll just end up buying some plastic crates and zip-tying them to the load bed.

I can't see me commuting on it unless I'm going shopping on the way home or something.  It's remarkably heavy and if I wasn't already in awe of Gerald, I certainly am now...

I can't really see the bottom bracket area - is there any reason why it can't be fitted with a triple chainset?
