Waterproof jeans
« on: 07 October, 2008, 09:13:22 am »
AlpKit have just released a beta version of some waterproof jeans that they claim are suitable for climbing or biking. Could be ideal for commuting if you don't want to look like a numpty in rainlegs or overtrousers.

Anyway you can get them for £35 if you register to provide product feedback.

Details here: http://www.alpkit.com/colab/projects/jeanius/

Wow, they look bloody brilliant!  Denim is so good for utility riding, but when it gets wet it's worse than useless.

I wonder how many washes it'll do before it looses it's waterproofing?  That's always the key with posh water-shedding fabrics, isn't it?

I haven't read all the blurb but the waterproofness is from the actual fabric rather than a treatment, I think.

I've ordered a pair anyway. At that price they're worth a punt and if they look as good in real life they'll be useful for more than bike use.

Just what I was thinking. My Hypnotic Designs Lefty Lucys 3/4s started off making water bead even though they didn't look/feel like traditional waterproofs, but no longer do it after a few washes, even though I put on them on a short, cold wash with no detergent like the label said. The blurb said something about silicone, which might act differently.

JT can you remember what the sizing choice was like? I'm doubtful that they'd have a size that would fit me at this stage (long legs, smaller waist).

No specific cut for birds yet. Sizes are your bog standard mens waist sizes with two leg lengths, i.e. 30/32, 30/34, 32/32, 32/34 and so on.

Thanks, that's as I suspected. Possibly I could get the 30/34 and let them sit on my hips and pretend they were what Topshop calls the 'boyfriend' cut...

30/34 aren't available, unfortunately, just 30/32 then the 34 legs start at 32 waist.
I'm between sizes so I ordered the smaller size as they look quite baggy from the video.

The material is where the waterproofing comes from, not a coating.  It's the same process as used for Howies Epic cotton jackets.  On the Alpkit forum the developer chap says his Jeanius are still waterproof after 18 months.

These should be ideal for my commute.  I hate having to put waterproof overtrousers on.

Hmmm, getting the 32 waist for me probably would end up in a 'builders' cut! So I should probably leave alone for now.

You shouldn't have been looking!

I had harboured optimistic thoughts that hardly anyone saw that photo, as it was soon taken down. Don't go smashing that illusion now.

Sorry Nicknack, the photo will not be making an appearance. Not that it's particularly exciting anyhow!

Back on topic and my jeans arrived today.

They're too big.  :( The cut is generous so I'm going to try and defy the laws of physics and go for a 32" waist.

But they really do look and feel just like proper jeans.
They don't smell like jeans but I'm sure that'll go.

I wish these ones fit, I'm dying to chuck some water on them.

I like some of Alpkit's stuff and they seem like really genuine people behind the company but, are these jeans not heavy? I could see them as a more functional, practical alternative to normal denim jeans for everyday wear but I really can't imagine wearing them on the bike. I'll be very interested to follow the feedback here, and on the Alpkit website.

What I want to know is how have they got round the seam problem?
