BBC SPOTY and Chris Hoy
« on: 02 November, 2008, 07:03:26 pm »
Looks like Chris will need all the votes we can muster to beat off Lewis Hamilton who has just been "crowned"  :hand:

Seems to me that although Hamilton has some "skills" he does have some assistance from a high powered engine .... Hoy IS the engine.

Vote for Chris Hoy now - you know it makes sense.

I've just spent the weekend with my father-in-law who will watch any sport on TV (but is mainly a rugby/golf man). He doesn't like the cycling much but he reckoned Chris Hoy deserved to win SPOTY without a doubt.

So maybe the man on the street will look beyond Hamilton because really, from F1, only Max Mosley has captured the public imagination in the way that the cyclists did in Beijing.

The thing is, Hoy got maybe 2 weeks of exposure at best...Hamilton got 6 months.

It's a fix anyway. No point in voting. The BBC have already decided who's won it....

Surely not, you'll be telling us next that they named the Blue Peter cat without heed to the voters. What a suggestion!

I don't think they've started the "voting" yet.

That girl with the big nose will win though. Just looking at the Beeb site confirms that.

I'll wager a tenner on it too!

I shall quote this post in a month or so when I'm proved right  :P

It seems that voting will be by phone only and on the evening of the show only.

Don't waste your money by playing along with their silly games. It doesn't matter who wins.

Talking of phone votes, I was round at my parents' house yesterday evening so was obliged to watch "Strictly". It would be hard for me to care less about that programme if I tried, but even I was horrified at the way they blatantly ripped off the phone voters by not ejecting the loser.

You'd think they'd have learned by now but clearly not. I hope they get the book thrown at them.

I think when they were announcing all the Olympians the cyclists got much bigger cheers than the other ones.

Sour old get, Smutch!  We've cheered 'em blue all year and posed next to their holy relics bikes and I start to get why footie supporters are so loony, now, 'cos I've loved it all (even the woes, Readie) and feel a weird sense of ownership to our bike racers (and all the Olympians, really).

Cyclists on telly and nobody's talking about drugs or whining nasally about the Highway Code?  Winning cyclists dripping in gold and looking foxy (VP:Rowr!)?  HELL YES.

Apparently they did that because the votes cast by the judges meant that it would be impossible for one particular couple to stay in based on the phone vote, presumably based on whatever calculation they use to combine judges' and punters' votes. So the BBC thought this was the fairest way to deal with the issue, and all punters' votes cast will be held over until next week.

I only know this because I was listening to the news on Radio 4, innit.

Hamilton has just got the biggest cheer of all.  He'll walk it.

Well, I thought the cyclists represented themselves well. But it's a TV thing, not a sport thing. Hamilton will get it. Black kid from an unassuming background with a clear talent, with a very sellable partnership from his Pa (8 years of punting round the UK to karting tracks in the formative years).

Mrs S says Calzaghe should have been up for it. Fifteen years of boxing, and he can still string a sentence together (pretty much). Pretty good going!

Edit: Anyone know why Sue Barker is wearing one of those CSI crime scene paper jumpsuit thingies?
